How to Become an Alabama Plumber

How do I become a licensed plumber in Alabama?
Anyone interested in becoming a Gas Fitter or Plumber in the State of Alabama must first become an apprentice.
The Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board defines an apprentice as “a person other than a master or journeyman gas fitter or plumber, who is engaged in learning and assisting in the installation of gas pipe, equipment, apparatus, and appliances, and shall work directly under the supervision of a journeyman or master gas fitter or plumber, and who has successfully fulfilled the registration requirements of the board and has been duly registered by the board as such for the current year” No written exam is required and you must complete a registration form and include a copy of Proof of Citizenship or Lawful Presence of Non-Citizen form. The fee for a plumbers apprenticeship is $25 for the initial application and just $10 annually thereafter.
Once you have fulfilled two years working as an apprentice, you are then able to take the Journeyman Plumbers Exam. You’ll find an excellent exam prep course to help you study for and pass this exam at Plumbers Training Institute. You’ll need to be licensed as a Journeyman Plumber for at least one year before you are allowed to move on to take a Master Plumbers Exam. The same applies to Gas Fitters.
If you want a Medical Gas license, you are required to be certified by the National Institute of testing & Certification.
