How to Get a South Dakota Plumber License

  1. Meet state requirements:
    1. Journeyman:
      1. Have 4 years experience as an apprentice plumber.
      2. Have spent at least 1,900 hours per year during these four years as an apprentice.
    1. Plumbing Contractor:
      1. Have 6 years experience as a plumbing contractor, plumber, or plumber's apprentice with at least two of those years as a plumbing contractor or plumber
      2. Have spent at least 1,900 hours per year during these six years as a plumbing contractor, plumber or plumber's apprentice
  2. Complete and submit an application for licensure along with applicable fees
  3. Take and pass the South Dakota plumber exams
